What Will It Take For You To Create a Better Life?

Many of us talk about creating a better life. We want our life to be different – but how? We’re often not sure or clear on what we really want. So we keep doing what we have always done. Wanting or wishing for change but not actually doing anything about it.

If you keep on doing what you’ve always done,
you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got.
W.L. Bateman

Why is that? Is our life not really that bad that we aren’t motivated enough to change? Are we lazy? Are we too busy to actually make change? Is it lack of clarity? Is it lack of motivation?

We all have excuses and justifications for our lack of action. We aren’t wrong and we certainly aren’t alone with our behaviour.

Why then do some people suddenly have absolute clarity over what is important in their life? They know what they have to do, when they have to do it and why they should be doing it?

I know for a couple of my friends, lately, their reason for clarity has been ill health. Both friends had been diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness. Both friends had their life put on hold for approximately six months while they went through treatment. Both friends have come out of the ordeal [for want of a more suitable word] having clarity, complete and utter clarity about what is really important for them and the people they love the most.
Both friends are now creating the life they really want to live. Are they fortunate or not, that they had to go through such a traumatic period to gain clarity?

So what can the rest of us do to gain clarity? What can we use to motivate us? Why is it that people who face their own death suddenly know what is important to create the life they want to lead while the rest of us busy ourselves so we don’t have to take action?

I am interested to know what would motivate you to change? Is it money, health, relationships, career?

Evan Money said:

Take Action and the World is Yours.

So what action do you have to take to create your ideal life? There are many ways to do this. One suggestion is to look at your life in categories and rate them out of 10. These categories are individual and up to you; however, to assist you to get started may I suggest the following:

  • Health
  • Fitness
  • Business / Career
  • Community
  • Personal Growth
  • Finance
  • Relaxation
  • Romance / Significant other
  • Spiritual

When you are evaluating, your score doesn’t matter, what matters is the next step. For example, if I rated fitness a 6 out of 10, then my next question would be, what do I have to do to move this category to a 7? Think about your next step and take action to make it happen. Step by step, action by action, you are on your way to creating a better life -the life you want.

You can make improvements in one category at a time or identify a few. Be mindful of planning to make too many changes that it becomes overwhelming and you run back to your comfort zone. At times, creating a better life may mean you have to take a step out of your comfort zone and do something different or new. Just take a small step that means you will take action to create a better life. Take the attitude of bring it on and make your life one that excites and motivates you every day!

Is Your Life Out of Control?

Perhaps it’s because I have recently had a holiday, but I have found that many conversations with people are based around how busy they are that they never get time for themselves. The conversation usually ends with, “but what can I do?”

This is said as a statement not a question. I then find that I am in a dilemma as I know they are not really seeking a solution or advice from me. What is it they are looking for when they say something like that? Is it confirmation that they are right; life is too busy, none of us have control? Is it agreement? Do they want to hear how busy I am too which confirms their beliefs? What is the outcome they are looking for? I could challenge them on their statement, but I know that is not what they are seeking at all.

So what do I mean by challenge them? I could ask them if they have thought of any activities that they could eliminate? That could be from reducing work hours, to resigning from a committee, it may be the kids, reduce the number of activities they are involved with, perhaps they get a house cleaner, a gardener, or even ask the family members to step up and help out a little bit more.

Realistically, we have choices in life. At times, I am not sure we realise that. We are the one who need to take control of our life. If we do look at all the activities we are doing and we don’t want to drop out, reduce, eliminate or change any of them then we have chosen that option. When you think of it this way that usually means you are doing all these things because you want to. That means you have chosen this and you are comfortable with your choices. Perhaps just looking at it in this way can mean that you no longer feel overwhelmed or pushed as you have decided to live this way. It is your choice and you are happy with that.

Did they end up with too many commitments because they can’t say no when others ask for help and support? If that is you then you need to take some time to think about who is benefiting from you helping out and who is not benefitting. The committee you are on may benefit greatly from your support but maybe it is you who is pushed just that little bit too far. It could be your partner or other family members that are missing you. If this is the case then it is time to take stock, and more importantly take responsibility and do the right thing by you.
I know it is a bit of a rant this time but I do feel strongly about this. Life is all about choices and we are the drivers. If we want to exercise but can’t find the time, that means we have made a choice that exercise isn’t a priority. If we want to catch up with friends but don’t make the call, then we are making a choice and that isn’t a priority. They actually say if you want to do something enough, you will make that a priority. Deep down that really means we are the drivers and if we feel out of control so much that we find we aren’t enjoying our life then we need to do something different.

If you are feeling trapped then reflect on the words by Audrey Hepburn “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says “I’m possible.” We just have to work out how to make it happen. What do you need to do differently to take back control?

Time Management and Shopping

If you set up a system for when you go shopping then you will find that shopping is more fun and enjoyable and will take less time. Do you know that we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time? This means that we have a lot of money invested in clothing that we don’t wear – let alone the time it took us to purchase all those items.

If you follow some rules then you will save yourself some time when shopping:

Know what suits your body
  • Learn your body shape
  • Understand what colours suit you

Know your reason for going shopping:
  • What is your reason for wanting to purchase a new item
  • Write down what items you need to purchase
  • Ask yourself – when will I wear it? Where will I wear it? How many times will I wear it?

Preparation for shopping:
  • Allow enough time
  •  Think about the shopping hours and try to shop when there are less people at the shops
  •  If you are co-ordinating items then take those items with you then you won’t wonder if they go, you will know

Questions to ask:
  • How many items in my wardrobe will the item go with?
  • Can it be dressed up or dressed down?
  • Will you be able to use it in more than one season?

If you purchase an item that needs to be altered then take it to be altered immediately. Otherwise, it may just be another item at home that hangs in your wardrobe.

Another way to save time is to actually go through your wardrobe at least once a year. That way, you can ensure that your wardrobe is always functional and serves you. Some questions to ask and guidelines to follow include:
  • Anything that you won’t get repaired - then out it goes
  • Anything that no longer looks good – out it goes
  • Anything that doesn’t fit you – either too big or too small – out it goes
  • Anything that is dated – out it goes
  • Anything that you feel uncomfortable in – out it goes

Following these tips and guidelines will ideally save you time when you go shopping so that you can use your time for more productive and fun experiences.

Power to Choose

We constantly make choices every day. If we set a goal of health and fitness which means we exercise every morning, then that needs to become our priority, we have the power to choose what we do. When the alarm goes off of a morning, we have a choice – we can stay in that nice warm bed and grab another hour of sleep or we can get up and exercise and be on the path to achieving our goals. It is always our choice.

Thousands of years ago, Aristotle said, “You are what you repeatedly do.”  So are you going to keep repeating what you are currently doing and not change or move forward, or are you going to take some time and identify ways that you can improve your life?

There are going to be hiccups and road blocks that get in your way but draw strength from knowing that you have the power to choose to find another way, another road, and another option. Don’t let excuses get in your way.
The following are some examples of truly inspiration people who could have easily let the excuse of age get in their way however they didn’t choose the easy option.
  • Golda Meir was 71 when she became prime minister of Israel.
  • Doc Counsilman, at 58, became the oldest person ever to swim the English Channel
  • Henry Ford went bankrupt 5 times before succeeding in the auto industry
  • 14 publishers rejected Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with the Wind”.
  • Edison greatest accomplishment is the light bulb he was most famous for the following quote in regards to his persistence in developing the light bulb …
 “I have not failed.
I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Thomas Edison
  • Colonel Sanders had over a 1000 knockbacks in a two year period for his Kentucky Fried Chicken Recipe
So consider the strength in your power to choose.

Bear in Mind - There is always a way

Even if it is not true, act like it is and usually you can find a way to achieve what you want to achieve.
  • You can push through the tough times
  • Persist a little longer
  • Search a little harder
  • Keep going
  • Failure is giving up
  • Everything else is progress
By believing there is always a way you give yourself every opportunity to experience success!

You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be!

There is inside you all of the potential
to be whatever you want to be, all of the energy
to do whatever you want to do.
Imagine yourself as you would like to be,
doing what you want to do,
and each day, take one step towards your dream.
And though at times it may seem too difficult
to continue, hold on to your dream.
One morning you’ll awake to find that
you’re the person you dreamed of,
doing what you wanted to do,
simply because you had the courage
to believe in your potential
and to hold on to your dream.
Donna Levine

You have the resourcefulness you need for whatever you decide to choose.

You REALLY do have the:
  • Courage
  • Passion
  • Determination
  • Fire
We can do anything if we have a compelling reason and the focus. There is always a way. Even if it’s not true, act like it is and usually you can find a way to achieve what you want to achieve.

The power to choose is what gives us the opportunity to create a different life! As an individual, you always have a choice.

Respecting and Managing Time

At the end of the day have you ever thought to yourself, “Wow, I was busy all day, but I don’t feel like I achieved anything,” or “Today was a great day; I got loads done!” What caused the difference in the outcome? Both were busy days, but one felt unproductive and the other was productive. The difference usually lies in the fact that you got the most important tasks done. That’s why you feel good. It was a productive day, not just “being busy.”

Many of us underestimate the value of time and take it for granted because time just goes on and on. We often say ‘we’ll do it tomorrow’ or ‘l’ll do that when I have time’. What we don’t understand is that time is a valuable resource – it may actually be our most valuable resource.

Time is free, but it’s priceless.
You can’t own it, but you can use it.
You can’t keep it, but you can spend it.
Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.
Harvey MacKay

You have the same amount of time each day as world leaders, such as The President and the Prime Minister, the same amount of time as successful entrepreneurs such as Richard Branson and Bill Gates. The same amount of time as world famous entertainers such as Lady GaGa and Katy Perry.Your education, social standing, financial status doesn’t make a difference to the amount of time you get – no matter what happens we all get exactly the same amount of time, 1,440 minutes a day.

Control of time is the key to being more efficient. It is an important skill to develop so that we can accomplish more tasks than the average person each and every day.So, how do you spend your time?
  • Does your day have a structure?
  • Can that structure be improved?
The first step is to start measuring how long tasks take. This will give you an indication whether you under or over schedule your day. The majority of us actually under estimate how long a task will take and that is why we often don’t get everything done we want to complete in a day.

For the next week, whenever you are about to begin a task.
  1. Stop and estimate how long the task will take.
  2. Then compare how long it actually took.
You can learn an incredible amount from this exercise. I recommend starting this from the moment you get up. Know how long it takes you to get ready of a morning, how long you take to exercise, how long it takes to drive to the train station or to work. Then when you are at work, learn how long it takes you from walking in the door to actually starting work. What is the first task you do of a day? Is it always the same first task? How long does it take? When do you check your emails? How long do you spend checking emails?

Knowing how long even basic tasks such as getting ready of a morning take may mean you now understand why you are always racing out the door a couple of minutes late.It will allow you to more accurately estimate how much work you can complete in a day which in turn may change how you schedule your day.

Imagining only owning 100 things!

I read an article by Kristin Tillotson from the Star Tribune in Minneapolis where she wrote of a family that are really trying to live green, save money and be free.

Think about what is the minimum number of items you could live with and how different your life would be with only the minimum.

This Swindlehurt’s family is breaking tradition and really going against the grain of current society by getting rid of as much stuff as they can.

Simplifying their lives
Apparently there is a National movement in America of people who are simplifying their lives – and imagine the difference on your savings by eliminating as many possessions as you can and resisting buying anything else.

It is linked towards green living, The Swindlehurt’s who the article focused on said that “The 100 Things Challenge” was what started it all. This challenge dared people to keep only 100 things. It was launched by Dave Bruno three years ago. It has picked up a Facebook following and naturally a book deal.

The goal is to free you from the demands of consumerism, from being stuck on stuff. Imagine how different your life would be. No filing cabinet, no dresser, no incredible collection of DVD’s, no mismatched coffee cups. What would be the 100 things you would keep?

Living minimal like this has definite benefits beyond the reduced environmental footprint such as reduced cleaning time. Not being anchored to material possessions, the money saved the feeling of being more organised.

Times are changing
It is interesting to note that we tend to travel in a circle through our life and many years ago our grandparents or parents grew up in the depression with very little, until now-a-days when we have excess everywhere from our possessions to our weight. Many people are feeling overwhelmed by their possessions and are making a conscious choice to reduce and eliminate.

People are starting to feel different. Material possessions are not necessary to show how successful you have been. According to a study of the American Dream by MetLife Generation Y is more into making friends than amassing objects.

You don’t have to get down to 100 things but really take a look around and every day take some possessions out of your house. It is a real freedom. It opens up so many possibilities. What is the minimum you could live with?

Exercise and Increase Your Productivity

Many of us are aware that during the night we have a rhythm to our sleep – light sleep, deep sleep . . .  however did you know that during the day our bodies also have a rhythm?

Take note as to how you work during the day, once you commence work do you find you can get going but later in the day between 2.30 to 3.30 you start to feel sluggish. Well that is your body rhythm telling you that it is fatiguing.

It is during this period of time when you are start to lose concentration and you will know because of the signs and signals your body gives you such as fidgeting, self-distraction, hunger, thirst, looking for easy distractions, not doing the work you really should be doing. Why not take a walk! Just 10 minutes can make all the difference.

After your walk you can come back to work and you will be ready to go again. Rather than persisting and not really being productive taking a break will allow you to come back refreshed and “on” task. This will increase your focus and concentration. If you had not got up and walked away from the desk then you will continue to work slower, make more mistakes, and procrastinate on decisions because you are not clear. So go for a walk and increase your productivity. You will notice the difference.

My favourite quotes about Goal Setting.

If you do nothing to achieve your goals, your destiny is coming,
if you take action, your destiny is coming.

There is no escaping the future so make it remarkable

Author unknown

The purpose of goals is to focus our attention.
The mind will not reach towards achievement until it has clear objectives.
The magic begins when we set goals.
It is then that the switch is turned on and the power to accomplish becomes a reality.

Dust If You Must!

“A house becomes a home when you can write, “I love you” on the furniture.”

I can’t tell you how many countless hours that I have spent CLEANING!

I used to spend at least 8 hours every weekend making sure things were just perfect – “in case someone came over.”

Then I realised one day that no one came over; they were all out living life and having fun!

Now, when people visit, I find no need to explain the “condition” of my home. They are more interested in hearing about the things I’ve been doing while I was away living life and having fun.

If you haven’t figured this out yet, please heed this advice.

Life is short. Enjoy it.

Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better to paint a picture or write a letter, bake a cake or plant a seed, ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there’s not much time, with rivers to swim and mountains to climb, music to hear and books to read, friends to cherish and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world’s out there with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair, a flutter of snow, a shower of rain.

This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind, old age will come and it’s not kind.

And when you go – and go you must – you, yourself will make more dust!

If’s now what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.

You Can Be In Control - Part 2

How have you gone the last couple of weeks? Have you taken note of the times you have not been in control?

Have you considered how you reacted to different situations and recognised the times when you could have reacted differently?

Have you tried to stop yourself when others are trying to take control?

Here are the steps!

Making the choice to be in control can be empowering you only need to control yourself.

> Recognise that you have the power to choose how you react to a situation

> Recognise when you are not taking responsibility for your life

> Practise stopping yourself when you are letting others control you and take responsibility

This is a new behaviour so practise is really important. But keep practicing.

Is your planning system up to scratch?

I have personally had a really busy 6 week period and my routine has been totally changed by what has been going on. I was asked to project manage a project for a firm which would take 3 to 4 weeks. This meant working full time for the firm then in my spare time chipping away at what needed to be completed for the business.

Well how did it all go?

Firstly, I love managing the project and whilst all did not go according to plan the delays were elements way beyond my control. I was waiting for shipments from India and China to come in and they were not arriving at the anticipated time this extended the project to a 5 week period.

Then on week 6 when I was to get back on track with all my other work my 5 year old daughter has been sick and has not been able to go to school for 3 days. Whilst I loved the time we got to spend together it meant another delay to getting back on track.

Is my life now chaos?

Actually, no by using my planning system of ensuring I get the most important tasks done I have been able to stay “on top” of most tasks. It has been an incredible freedom not to be completely stressed and frazzled by the change in routine and the almost impossible task of keeping everything going.

I am wrapped and actually excited to have tested my systems to the maximum and not everything has fallen in a heap. I am not saying that I didn’t have a couple of nights where I was utterly exhausted but the overall big picture is positive. Every client meeting I had I kept, every workshop I was still able to deliver and some of the other tasks were done.

I guess that is the benefits of practicing planning on a weekly to daily basis. Tasks can be moved and flexibility is really important as well as understanding what the top priorities are.

Planning is really freedom!

1,440 Minutes per Day

We all have the same 1,440 minutes per day – how we utilise that time determines our ability to have a productive day.

So focus on doing the really important and high priority tasks first, usually 3 to 4 tasks each day. Once you have completed those tasks, then you can start working on the smaller stuff.

At the very least if you only get the 3 to 4 high priority tasks done then you will feel like you have achieved something in your day. That’s such a fantastic feeling.

One of my favourite quotes from Stephen Covey is:

“I can not get it all done but I can get the most important things done.”

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT THINGS?

Time Tracking Exercise

Last post we focused on time wasters this time I would love to introduce to you a time tracking exercise that I really recommend. The objective is to think about how you are using your time, identify useless or non productive activities and eliminate them this also provides you with a better guide for how long a task actually takes.

In his excellent book "The Effective Executive," Peter Drucker identifies that effective executives follow three key steps to manage their time better:

1) They analyse the way they use their time and think about better ways of using it
2) They find wasteful and unproductive uses of their time and reduce them systematically
3) They consolidate their time into large chunks that they can use for their most important work.

So over the next two weeks I would highly recommend you attempt one of the two activities below:

This has 4 columsn which you record your activities in what you plan to do, what time you think it will take, what you actually did and how long that activity took.

TIME TRACKING OPTION 1

Time             Activity Planned    Est. Time   Activity Completed   Actual Time

6.00 – 6.30
6.30 – 7.00
7.00 – 7.30
7.30 – 8.00

In the above we plan our day and estimate how long an activity will take. Then we actually record what we did at that particular time and how long a task actually took. This achieves the following:

> Identifies whether we stick to our plan
> Identifies what we do when we vary our plan
> Identifies if we are accurate at estimating how long a task will take
> If we are not accurate, it provides us with a real life estimate of the actual time a task takes

TIME TRACKING OPTION 2

In this activity you record what activities you have been doing and then consider whether they were an essential activity or a non-essential activity.

TIME                                        ACTIVITY

                                    Essential          Non-essential

6.00 – 6.30
6.30 – 7.00
7.00 – 7.30
7.30 – 8.00

This exercise follows a similar example however this time we are reviewing whether tasks are essential or non-essential and identifies how much free time we would have each day if we could eliminate or reduce the non-essential tasks.

It is recommended you try either option 1 or 2 for 5 days however to get real benefits it is even better to do it for two weeks.

Good luck and enjoy your learning experience I personally got a lot of useful information from this exercise.

Starting the Year Successfully

Happy New Year, we wish you a year filled with abundance, happiness and success.

Ideally you have reflected on the past year and are making plans for the year ahead which is a really positive start to the year however it is important to write your goals down.

We set goals all the time:
§ I have 1 hour to do the grocery shopping
§ Today I will get the washing done
§ Today I will do the ironing
But we want to set “life goals”.

Why do we need to set “life goals?”
Your brain is programmed to look for what is important for you so by setting life goals in the important areas of your own life your subconscious will be on the look out for opportunities and this is where it finds things you may never have noticed if you only had a vague idea of what you were looking for.

The clearer your goals are the more likely you are to achieve them.

A goal properly set is halfway reached.
Abraham Lincoln

Study at Harvard University
A study was done at Harvard University. Students were asked who writes down their goals, and 3% said they did. The researchers went back to the students 20 years later. The 3% who wrote down their goals had a net worth that exceeded the 97% who did not.

Goal setting is not all about the dollar benefits it is about achieving. So take time to write down your goals. Enjoy the process and experience the success.

Time for Reflection [Part 2]

How is your reflection?
Last post we discussed that at this time of the year many of us are reflecting on what we have achieved this year and what we would like to achieve in the New Year. The answer for many is that they would like more time or balance and therefore I felt the saying below to be very appropriate.

Many of us struggle towards the balance goal
without ever stopping
to think what we are doing and
what we really want
in our lives.

Reflect to identity the direction you want to go.
